Why can I not get into Star Trek?

I have heard that it's great and know that the fan-base is huge, but I still just can't get into Star Trek! I am watching the original series first, then going in order, and I don't just want to go into TNG (like some people have told me to). I am on the sixth episode and I just feel like it drags on and on... I like sci-fi a lot, it's just this... I don't know. ANY sort of help would be appreciated.
